Is there Science behind Biofield Therapy?

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) defines biofields as “energy fields that purportedly surround and penetrate the human body. Biofield therapy is a completely holistic and natural way for your body to regain the natural energy flow which we were all born with.  Your body is an energy center, flowing to it energy down to every single cell.  Some believe that we have 7 energy centers – also known as Chakras – while others argue that we have hundreds.  Modalities include: Qigong, Reiki and Therapeutic touch.

If everything is energy and we are responding to that energy, it would also make sense that our entire body is an energy center made up of smaller parts down to the cells in our body. Overtime, these energy centers can get constricted through emotional pain and trauma as well as illness.

Several decades ago, the concept of our body being in “communication” (eg. the nervous an immune systems “talking”) was considered unscientific; today, it’s mainstream science. The same concept applies to our mental and emotional states together impacting our physical bodies in a manner that can influence disease as well as health, has moved from controversial to fact thereby contributing to the field of psychoneuroimmunology (the study of the effect of the mind on health and resistance to disease).  Biofield concepts are also behind, neuromodulation (direct stimulation of the nervous system with electrical signals) for treatment of central nervous system-related disorders.

Biofield therapy aims to bring this energy back into your body, through a licensed practitioner who is sensitive to this energy.  It’s important to note that the practitioner is not pulling or bringing energy from anywhere.  This is your body’s own energy that is being returned to you.  Though we all have the capability to bring this energy back to your bodies, we have lost this ability over time.  Biofield therapy is based on the the principle that your body is a self-repairing living entity. Just look at a simple cut that you get.  Without much effort, your body repairs the would through it’s own natural process. The physical body possess the ability to heal itself and that the healing process is accelerated by increasing the frequency and vibration to assist one in achieving a state of balance, health and wellness.

…”over the 6-week chemora- diation treatment period, women in the Healing Touch group showed no significant loss of NKCC whereas women in the relaxa- tion and standard care groups showed a sharp and significant decline of approximately 55%. We find the NKCC results striking, intriguing and potentially clinically important”

How it Works

The best benefit with Biofield therapy is that it does not need to be performed by touch.  It can be a hands-off method which is why hospitals prefer this method over many others.  It can be performed on a hospital bed or massage table while fully clothed. Sessions are generally 45-90 minutes and the energy can be described as hot, cold, tingling, numbness or pulling sessions.

The majority of the session will involve your practitioner using hand placements throughout areas of the body.  When combined with medicine and disease, we also modify these placements based on the disease and areas of greatest need.

Science & Biofield Therapy

While science continues to try to develop studies of understanding around how this works, reports of healing has been confirmed and documented in more than a many studies today.

For this reason, you will find Biofield therapy added to integrative medicine programs at major hospitals and medical schools, including UCLA, Stanford, and Columbia, UCI, UCSD and much more.  By integrating this method of self-healing with what conventional medicine tells us about illness and the body, the patient has the ability to take a holistic approach to healing.
